TV Guide interview
The Man Show with Josh Duhon By Nelson Branco You don't get more manly than the brooding and intense Josh Duhon on 'GH'. Find out more about one of soap's hottest newcomers. Equal parts Chris Evans and Josh Holloway, General Hospital's latest anti-hero Josh Duhon is winning fans each day as the mercurial yet sensitive bad boy Logan Hayes. Romancing the show's starlet, Julie Marie Berman's Lulu, has catapulted the actor into half of daytime's hottest new super-couple - and with the intimidating "L&L" initials we can expect this couple to be one memorable and enduring pairing in line with iconic lovers Luke and Laura, and Lucky and Liz. Add his sizzling chemistry and banter with Kirsten Storms (Maxie) as Logan's scheming partner-in-crime and in bed, Duhon is also in the enviable position of being stuck in the middle of daytime's sexiest love triangle as well. The articulate and outspoken actor chatted with TV Guide about his accidental journey into the land of soaps, what he thinks of those metrosexual actors on the big screen, why Berman was robbed of an Emmy last year, and what it's like taking GH into the future as the next generation of dysfunctional romantics in Port Charles.

TV Guide: You're a unique actor who doesn't necessarily scream 'I wanna be a soap star!' Did you ever see yourself on daytime?
Josh Duhon: I never saw myself in the daytime realm, and in fact I was opposed to it. But I have to admit now that I'm in the seventh month of my role, I'm loving it.

TVG: What about Logan appealed to you, and why does he resonate with the audience?
JD: Logan's a great role, because he's a great human being. People ask me, 'Is he a bad or good guy?' He's just a human being and he has a tendency to go both ways, but he's just so close to being a real guy's guy. It's easy to see him as a solider coming back from Iraq and not having a father growing up, which explains why he goes down the wrong path every so often.

TVG: What do your parents and friends think of you being on a soap?
JD: The thing with this show is even if you've never watched a soap, you know about GH. My whole family's watching it now - so that's kind of cool. My aunt owns a barbershop and the clients love to check me out on GH there - all the guy clients love me; all the female clients hate me!

TVG: Your sex scenes are pretty intense and raw - are they intimating to tape? I mean, it's safe to assume that Logan's having some rough sex with Maxie!
JD: [Laughs.] Certainly with Maxie; his sexual relationship with Lulu is certainly different, more emotional. My mom is like, 'Oh, gosh, here we go' and my dad's like, 'Yeah!'

TVG: In Soap Opera Digest, you stated your disappointment and disapproval over Hollywood's preference and obsession for the metrosexual male leading man, relating true masculinity to violent on-screen acts like heading into war - can you elaborate?
JD: The leading men in the '50s and '60s had a preference about them - a man would walk into a room and he had some backbone to him. There was more to him than a pretty face and a nice pair of clothes.

TVG: Like Paul Newman.
JD: Newman's a great example. He was very good-looking, but he also had a presence that came across on camera. He was a classic leading man, but it had nothing to do with his looks. Nowadays with the current roster of movie stars, they're far more concerned with how they look than the character. The other day, I was in the makeup room preparing to play scenes where Logan has just lost Lulu - he's not concerned whether or not he's shaved or showered. That's not important to the story. In fact, with some of the leading man today, in between takes they're screaming for a mirror. That should be the last thing on your mind when you're filming. Why would you care about what you looked like or what you're wearing?

VG: I get what you were trying to say now. Cool. I agree with you - image has overtaken show business. Were you intimated to act opposite five-time Emmy winner Anthony Geary [Luke]?
JD: This is sad - I knew Luke and Laura, but I didn't know the actors who played the part, but I was very impressed with the stature these two hold in the industry. And I certainly would include Kin Shriner [Scotty] in that category. Geary's so smooth, and Kin's unpredictable to act with.

TVG: It's almost like Logan is a hybrid of Scotty and Luke. You eerily resemble Shriner, and your character's as mischievous as Scotty. Also, it looks like Lulu and Logan are destined to become the new Luke and Laura.
JD: The way they’'re writing this is that Logan's definitely going to have a run-in with Luke regarding Lulu. Luke already has it out for Logan just because he's Scotty's son, but I doubt Luke can write Logan off because he's a lot like Luke at that age. I do think Logan's a hybrid of Scotty and Luke, for sure.

TVG: Logan is big-time karma for Scotty and Luke! I love the Maxie/Logan/Lulu triangle - and hope it continues to captivate us. What are your thoughts on the story?
JD: I love working with Kirsten and enjoy Logan/Maxie's banter. You almost get that 1950s banter from them as a couple, and that's cool. The chemistry between me and Julie is different; it's closer to what I think you have a tremendous love for a person. Clearly, Logan and Maxie have tremendous chemistry, but it's sexual, so we got a couple of different vibes in the triangle. I love working with Julie and Kirsten - and I appreciate that they have two different styles. Kirsten is a mouthy and witty actress, which comes across. Julie's a firecracker. I hear when they first were thinking of looking for someone to play opposite Julie as a rival, they needed someone who could stand their ground - and that was Kirsten because she was steam-rolling over everyone. I'm certainly looking forward to seeing where they take this storyline because it's the same dynamic that Scotty, Laura and Bobbie had.

TVG: Are you single? And in real life, who would you rather date - a Lulu or Maxie?
JD: I'm very single - and maybe would not like to be. That's just the way it is out here in L.A. In real life, that's a tough call - a Maxie or a Lulu ... wow!

TVG: How about a hybrid of the two?
JD: I think if you're looking for excitement and fun you go with Maxie, but if you desire loyalty and love, you go with Lulu. I think the right guy will be able to calm and tame Maxie a little bit, and in the same respect, I think the right guy can unleash some crazy and wildness in Lulu. I'm going to have to go with Lulu, because I'm big on trust and loyalty.

TVG: What was the reaction when Julie Marie Berman [Lulu] lost the Emmy Award this past year for best younger actress?
JD: I'm not saying this because Julie's my friend and co-star, but I watched the reels in that category and I have to say I don't think Jennifer Landon [Gewn] was as deep, organic and as true as Julie was. Not to say that Jennifer's work wasn't good, I just thought Julie was exceptional. I think a lot of people were shocked that Julie lost.

TVG: You have a lot of raw talent - I can easily see you on the big screen soon.
JD: I certainly appreciate that - and that's where I want to be, but right now I'm on GH. When I leave here, I've already told my agents that I don't want to consider prime-time TV unless it's something big on 24, so I can focus on film work. And for now, I just started a four-year contract, with some outs in between, so until then I get to work on the Rolls Royce of soaps.
